Curriculum
Senior School (9-12)
Our flexible and student driven curriculum, supportive staff and extensive resources provides our Senior students with the foundations for success.
A partnership with parents
At this sensitive age of emerging adulthood – a time when students wish to exercise greater independence and
individuality – we know that a strong and supportive partnership between home and school is imperative.
That’s why we endeavor to work with parents in giving every student the guidance and reassurance they need in these critical years of adult development.
Year 7-12 Curriculum Handbook
Year 10
Although Year 12 is arguably the most important year in a student’s academic career, we understand that Year 10 is vital in setting the tone for success.
Our Year 10 students are given the opportunity to undertake selected courses that are accredited towards the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE).
The addition of career education, work experience, homework club, visits to tertiary institutions and individual career and tertiary education planning prepares our Year 10 students for the demands of the SACE.
SACE
The curriculum which is set by the South Australian Certificate of Education Board (SACE Board) is divided into Stage 1 (Year 11) and Stage 2 (Year 12).
In supporting our students meet the SACE Board completion requirements, we offer:
- student centred subject choice in completing SACE with a focus on entrance to University, TAFE or employment
- individualised career planning service
- skilled and experienced senior secondary educators
- no charge Holiday Workshops and Homework Club
- opportunities to study Modern Greek and Italian to a SACE level – qualifying for bonus entry points for the University of Adelaide
- flexible learning time for Year 12 students
- opportunities to study VET units in areas of their choice – qualifying for dual accreditation towards SACE and further tertiary studies including onsite delivery of Certificate I Hospitality and Certificate II Kitchen Operations
A sense of community
In keeping with the proud ethos and culture of our College, our Senior School students are encouraged to contribute to our community through the Student Representative Council, Peer Mentoring Program and in participation in school events.
Studying Modern Greek at St George College
Stage 1 and 2 Modern Greek Continuers classes run after hours at St George College. All students in South Australia who have the abilities to study Modern Greek at senior level can enrol at St George College.
Modern Greek at a continuers level is a 10-credit or a 20-credit subject at Stage 1, and a 20-credit subject at Stage 2. At continuers level, students develop their skills to communicate meaningfully with people across cultures. Students are given opportunities to develop knowledge, awareness, and understanding of other languages and cultures in relation to their own. Students reflect on their own attitudes, beliefs, and values, and develop an understanding of how culture and identity are expressed through language.
Students develop and apply linguistic and intercultural knowledge, understanding, and skills by:
- Interacting with others to exchange information, ideas, opinion, and experiences in Modern Greek
- Creating texts in Modern Greek for specific audiences, purposes, and contexts to express information, feelings, ideas and opinion
- Analysing a range of texts in Modern Greek to interpret meaning
- Examining relationships between language, culture, and identity, and reflecting on the ways in which culture influences communication.
